Summary

The Contented Little Baby Book, based on Gina Ford's personal experience of caring for over 300 babies, was first published in 1999。 It quickly established Gina as an influential new authority on baby and childcare issues and has remained one of the bestselling parenting books in the UK for almost 20 years。

This completely revised edition of The New Contented Little Baby Book contains the most up-to-date advice available to parents。 Using the feedback from numerous readers and website members, Gina has been able to develop and elaborate on the information in her first book, while clearly setting out her philosophy on simple feeding and sleeping routines。

By creating routines that match a growing baby's innate natural rhythms, Gina prevents the hunger, overtiredness and colic that can lead to excessive crying。 Babies who are settled into Gina's gentle routines are happy and contented because their needs for food and sleep are appropriately met and they should sleep for their longest spell at night from an early age。

With detailed, prescriptive information on everything parents need to know, this book includes chapters on:

- Preparation for the birth
- How the routines evolved and the benefits of following a routine
- Milk feeding in the first year
- Understanding your baby's sleep
- Establishing a routine
- Introducing solid food in line with government and World Health Authority guidelines
- Common problems in the first year。

Whether you are expecting your first child, or are experiencing difficulties with an older baby, this comprehensive guide contains all the expert guidance you need to help your baby feed and sleep well。

Excellent common sense advice, logical and structured。 A step by step guide through the first year with great hints and tips regarding what to buy and actual routines you can follow。

Followed this with my PFB。It's good as a guide (pre internet) if you've never been around babies before but I adapted it for my own needs which was fine。 Followed this with my PFB。It's good as a guide (pre internet) if you've never been around babies before but I adapted it for my own needs which was fine。 。。。more

Gina Ford advocates for strict schedules when raising a baby。 This is terrible advice。 Having become a parent almost 12 weeks ago, I can’t imagine the stress of attempting to force timings on a newborn。 I’m glad I bought this secondhand because it is OUTDATED NONSENSE。

I’ll be honest I didn’t actually finish reading this。 It felt like punishment so I just didn’t bother。 I personally found this book just awful。 Way too over the top for me as a first time Mum and added to my feelings of inadequacy。 It’s a real shame - I know others who swear by it so I was really thinking it would be great for me but it just wasn’t。

I have an ambiguous feeling for this book。 From one point of view, it looks like it is too rigid and so unflexible。 From another point of view, most of the concepts look logical to me。 I don't think that I'll use the agenda blindly but I'll try to adapt some of the concepts and will check if it works。 Although my thoughts about this book are controversial, I recommend reading it before delivery。 I have an ambiguous feeling for this book。 From one point of view, it looks like it is too rigid and so unflexible。 From another point of view, most of the concepts look logical to me。 I don't think that I'll use the agenda blindly but I'll try to adapt some of the concepts and will check if it works。 Although my thoughts about this book are controversial, I recommend reading it before delivery。 。。。more

I didn’t spend much time with this book, but I did give the whole thing a quick skim/review。 I found much of it unrealistic and incompatible with my own goals and ideas about parenting。 Routines are a nice idea but you simply cannot force a baby to eat and sleep when they aren’t tired or hungry or just don’t want to, nor do I believe you should wear yourself out trying。 As a new first time mother, my priority is on establishing safety, trust, and bonding with my child。 Rules and routines can com I didn’t spend much time with this book, but I did give the whole thing a quick skim/review。 I found much of it unrealistic and incompatible with my own goals and ideas about parenting。 Routines are a nice idea but you simply cannot force a baby to eat and sleep when they aren’t tired or hungry or just don’t want to, nor do I believe you should wear yourself out trying。 As a new first time mother, my priority is on establishing safety, trust, and bonding with my child。 Rules and routines can come a bit later。 Much of the advice in this book I found cruel and unnecessary。 Wouldn’t recommend it。 。。。more

What a terrible, awful book。 Firstly, it puts so much unnecessary pressure on the parents, and secondly it is inhumane。 If you treated old people like this in a care home you'd be accused of cruelty and neglect, which is exactly what it endorses。 Oh and by the way, the author has no children。This book should be removed from publication。For help that follows what a baby really needs and is cruelty free take a look at The Milk Meg, especially helpful for breastfeeding parents。 What a terrible, awful book。 Firstly, it puts so much unnecessary pressure on the parents, and secondly it is inhumane。 If you treated old people like this in a care home you'd be accused of cruelty and neglect, which is exactly what it endorses。 Oh and by the way, the author has no children。This book should be removed from publication。For help that follows what a baby really needs and is cruelty free take a look at The Milk Meg, especially helpful for breastfeeding parents。 。。。more

I found the books to be informative but it was very regimental in how and when you should feed your baby or put them to sleep。 This is definitely more helpful as the baby gets older and naturally has more of a routine, prior to about 6 months it was nowhere close to what my baby was doing and she was a very settled and content baby, but I was left feeling like she wasnt behaving correctly as she didnt match what the book said she should。

This is very controversial book-some love it and some hate it。 I found the advice and information regarding sleeping and feeding useful。 Actually, the info here is echoed in many other books, blogs and articles。 Regarding the routine-my baby boy naturally felt into the suggested times but I do not follow it strictly and am flexible。 I do not agree with recommendations to give formula when you can breastfeed。 Also, I did not like the expressing business so did not even start。 Nevertheless, the su This is very controversial book-some love it and some hate it。 I found the advice and information regarding sleeping and feeding useful。 Actually, the info here is echoed in many other books, blogs and articles。 Regarding the routine-my baby boy naturally felt into the suggested times but I do not follow it strictly and am flexible。 I do not agree with recommendations to give formula when you can breastfeed。 Also, I did not like the expressing business so did not even start。 Nevertheless, the suggesting sleeping routine was very useful for me。 I was more flexible with feeding times and responded to what my baby needed but nqturally it was very similar to the suggested routine。 I personally think you adapt the advice and suggested routines to your baby needs rather than following them blindly and strictly to the point。 Also, I believe in having some sort of routine for the baby to help both the baby and the mum。I saw some comments that said "baby is left crying for long time"-not sure if they read the book fully or just made the assumption from the extract。 Using the routine my baby was never left crying and his needs were always met, hence the flexibility in applying the routine。 In my impression neither the author advocates leaving babies to cry。 。。。more

In the early days I did try to use this book as a Bible。 The Nazi-Lady as my boyfriend calls her, has got some good ideas and having a routine can be helpful, BUT her routine is so strict that it ended up stressing me out much more than helping me。 She doesn't allow for little problems like a baby not latching for two months or living in Spain where routines are completely out of whack。 Three stars because it's easy to read but please read it but put it down to relax and enjoy your newborn。 In the early days I did try to use this book as a Bible。 The Nazi-Lady as my boyfriend calls her, has got some good ideas and having a routine can be helpful, BUT her routine is so strict that it ended up stressing me out much more than helping me。 She doesn't allow for little problems like a baby not latching for two months or living in Spain where routines are completely out of whack。 Three stars because it's easy to read but please read it but put it down to relax and enjoy your newborn。 。。。more

This book gets 3 stars in some respects and 5 stars in others。 So 4 stars。 Firstly, if you are a new parent without a clue, there is a lot of useful stuff in there。 What to buy and what not to waste your money on。 How often to feed (4 hourly really worked for us)。 How to start solids (worked wonderfully for me)。 The routines are the most controversial bit of the book, on which more below。The book promised if the routines are followed, there would be no colic。 I was reluctant to follow the routin This book gets 3 stars in some respects and 5 stars in others。 So 4 stars。 Firstly, if you are a new parent without a clue, there is a lot of useful stuff in there。 What to buy and what not to waste your money on。 How often to feed (4 hourly really worked for us)。 How to start solids (worked wonderfully for me)。 The routines are the most controversial bit of the book, on which more below。The book promised if the routines are followed, there would be no colic。 I was reluctant to follow the routines because they seemed like a lot of pressure, but after one bout of colic that lasted for a couple of hours solid, I tried the routines。 I can say for sure we never had colic again, although my daughter was not a colicky baby per se, and it may have been a coincidence。 I can also say for sure that the routines nearly drove me bonkers。 I will however add that I am an A-type overachiever/perfectionist personality who has to hit the target 100%。 If you can be sensible about the routines (unlike me) and cheerfully use them as a guideline, you will be fine。 If you are the kind of person, like me, who takes extremely seriously sentences like "It is imperative that the baby goes down for the second nap before 3 pm", then I urge you to chuck the book in the bin right now in order to save your sanity! Eventually it was exactly what I had to do, and I felt instantly better。 。。。more

This book was a bit overwhelming and, honestly, rather confusing。 There's also some notes in here that go directly against advice I've heard from professionals (such as how you shouldn't start expressing milk as early as this book recommends)。 I feel like this is a good place to start but it's very strict and rather confusing on when to move to the next stage。 This book was a bit overwhelming and, honestly, rather confusing。 There's also some notes in here that go directly against advice I've heard from professionals (such as how you shouldn't start expressing milk as early as this book recommends)。 I feel like this is a good place to start but it's very strict and rather confusing on when to move to the next stage。 。。。more

Never consider a baby book as the only source of truth。 Always double check and cross-reference book suggestions。 If book suggestions work for you - great, if they don’t - don’t stress and try other approaches。 Suggestions in this particular book are too rigid and routine/schedule based。 Did not work for me or my baby。

Very prescriptive, which won't be everyone's cup of tea。 My advice is to read it and figure out the guidelines and then apply to your baby as well as you can。 The basic gist of it is that if a baby is well fed and sleeps well in the day then they should be able to sleep through the night as soon as they're able。 So get the feeding and sleeping right in the day as it's all one big cycle of one thing affecting another thing。 Also important to let baby self-settle。 Trust that your baby will be able Very prescriptive, which won't be everyone's cup of tea。 My advice is to read it and figure out the guidelines and then apply to your baby as well as you can。 The basic gist of it is that if a baby is well fed and sleeps well in the day then they should be able to sleep through the night as soon as they're able。 So get the feeding and sleeping right in the day as it's all one big cycle of one thing affecting another thing。 Also important to let baby self-settle。 Trust that your baby will be able to do this on their own。 I do think a routine is really important for baby as they don't know night from day, big eats and big sleeps from naps and snacks so that's why the routines are important, to teach them that。 。。。more
